Home Matters: Snuffing Out Candle Fire Risks

Did You Know?

There are more than 1,000 candle fires each year in the UK, according to the Home Office. What’s more, the number of Britons killed by candle fires has more than doubled in the last couple years. With so much danger from a common household item, how can you keep yourself safe while burning candles? Read on to learn about what dangers and precautions to consider the next time you light a candle.

The Danger of Burning Candles

More than three fires are started by candles every day, according to the Home Office. Candle fires often start because the candle was left unattended or inadequately supervised, a combustible material was left too close or a child played with the candle.

Most candle-related house fires occur between October and February, due in part to the winter and festive season.

While you may be focused on the festive season during this time, don’t overlook the hazards presented by burning candles around decorations.

The safest alternative to using a burning candle is to use battery-operated candles.

Dos and Don’ts of Candle Use

  • Keep candles away from flammable materials, such as curtains.
  • Put out candles when you leave the room. Never leave candles unattended.
  • Burn candles in a well-ventilated room.
  • Don’t move candles once they are lit.
  • Frequently check your smoke alarms. These devices give you time to exit in the event of a fire, get to safety and call 999.
  • Practise your fire escape route. Everyone in your home should know what to do in the case of a fire.

Protect Your Home and Your Life

Scented candles are becoming more popular as gifts and home commodities every year. This past year alone, candle sales increased by nearly 20 per cent, according to industry research. While these items can bring warmth to your home, they can also open the opportunity for danger. Neglecting to prioritise fire safety could lead to huge costs, injury and even death.
